Interoperability Never Went Away. It Became Everything.

For a while, interoperability was one of the hottest topics in Enterprise Content Management. Every vendor talked about integrations, connectors, APIs, and eliminating information silos.
Then the conversation changed.
Today the spotlight belongs to AI.
Every conference, webinar, and product announcement promises smarter automation, intelligent assistants, and better business outcomes. Yet one of the most important technologies enabling those capabilities receives surprisingly little attention.
Interoperability didn't disappear.
It became an expectation.
The Best ECM System Is Rarely the Only System
Organizations no longer expect one application to manage every business process. Finance uses one system. HR uses another. GIS has its own platform. Public safety has specialized applications. ERP, CRM, permitting, payroll, GIS, collaboration platforms, and cloud services all generate content that matters.
That reality makes interoperability more important than ever.
The value of an ECM platform is no longer measured by how much information it stores. It's measured by how well it works with everything else.
If employees have to jump between five systems just to complete one process, the technology isn't helping. It's creating friction.
AI Doesn't Eliminate Integration. It Depends On It.
Artificial intelligence has accelerated the need for connected systems.
An AI assistant can only answer questions about information it can access.
Interoperability allows workflow automation to extend beyond a single application and coordinate work across the organization
Business intelligence only becomes meaningful when information from different systems can be combined into a complete picture.
Without interoperability, AI becomes remarkably good at analyzing isolated pieces of information.
The repository stopped being the destination years ago. Today, it's part of the route.
With interoperability, it can help organizations make decisions across departments.
The difference is enormous.
The Next Stage of ECM Isn't Storage. It's Connection.
As organizations mature, the conversation naturally shifts.
First, they digitize paper.
Then they improve search.
Then they automate work.
Eventually they discover that their biggest challenges don't exist inside the ECM system at all.
They exist between systems.
This is where many digital transformation initiatives either accelerate or stall.
Organizations that connect their business applications create processes that feel seamless to employees.
Organizations that don't simply replace one information silo with several digital ones.
Interoperability Is About People, Not Technology
When most people hear "integration," they picture APIs and technical diagrams.
Employees experience something completely different.
They experience not having to enter the same information twice.
They experience approvals that happen automatically.
They experience finding the document they need without remembering which application owns it.
They experience business processes instead of software.
That's what interoperability really delivers.
Looking Ahead
One of the themes in our What's Next framework is that every stage builds on the one before it.
You can't automate information you can't find.
You can't apply AI to disconnected information.
And you can't create intelligent business processes if every application operates independently.
Interoperability isn't a feature that belongs to one stage of digital transformation.
It's the thread that connects all of them.
As organizations continue adopting AI, cloud services, and new business applications, the question won't be, "Does this system have AI?"
It will be, "Can this system work with everything else we already have?"
Because in the end, intelligence is valuable.
Connected intelligence is transformational.
