My First Arizona Municipal Clerks Conference

I'll admit it. Heading into my first Arizona Municipal Clerks Association conference, I had a small fantasy that local agencies would be lining up at our booth saying things like, "Thank goodness you're here! We've been waiting for someone to help us modernize our records management program!"

Municipal technology conferences have a funny way of keeping your expectations in check.

What I found instead was something much more interesting. Arizona's municipal market is informed, engaged, and asking many of the same questions we've been hearing from local agencies in California for years. They know Laserfiche. Many are already using it. Others have invested heavily in competing platforms. In fact, four of the ten vendors at the conference had some connection to the Laserfiche ecosystem. Apparently, everyone got the memo that Arizona is worth paying attention to.

The good news? Local agencies aren't looking for a superhero to swoop in and save the day. They're looking for thoughtful partners who understand where they are today and can help them figure out what's next.

That may not sound like the most exciting trade show story you've ever heard, but for me, it was incredibly encouraging.

One of my favorite things about attending conferences is listening. Every market is a little different, and people will tell you very quickly what's important to them if you're willing to ask the right questions. The conversations I had weren't centered around software features or flashy demos. They were about retention schedules, trusted systems, cloud adoption, governance, and how organizations continue to mature their use of Laserfiche.

This year, we brought something a little different to the conference. We recently developed a "What's Next with Laserfiche?" graphic to help local agencies consider where they are in their Laserfiche journey and which opportunities might make sense for them next.

Are you still focused on digitizing records? Have you implemented retention schedules? Is it time to move to the cloud? Are you ready for Trusted Systems, automation, or AI? Digital transformation doesn't happen all at once, and there isn't a single path that works for everyone.

What started as a simple conversation piece quickly became one of our most valuable tools at the booth. It shifted the discussion from, "Do you have Laserfiche?" to "What are you trying to accomplish next?" Municipal clerks would stop, study the graphic, and begin thinking about where their organization fit into the bigger picture.

One of my favorite comments from the conference came from someone who realized we weren't simply trying to sell them software. They appreciated that we were genuinely interested in understanding what stage they were in and where they wanted to go next. Those are my favorite kinds of conversations because they're usually the ones that lead to the best outcomes.

Another highlight of the conference was spending time with the City of Goodyear. As one of our Arizona clients, they've become wonderful advocates for both Laserfiche and Complete Paperless Solutions. They generously shared their experiences with other attendees and even gave me a heads-up about upcoming opportunities in the state.

They also surprised me with something I definitely wasn't expecting: a challenge coin from the City Clerk's Office. Traditionally used to recognize service and achievement, I was honored to learn that I was only the third person to receive one.

I'll take that over another stress ball or branded pen any day.

In a business that's often measured by software licenses and project plans, it's nice to be reminded occasionally that relationships still matter.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Arizona is that building a presence in a new market isn't about showing up to one conference and expecting agencies to immediately sign on the dotted line. It's about listening, educating, and becoming part of the conversation.

The response to our "What's Next with Laserfiche?" graphic was positive enough that we've decided to continue the conversation with an upcoming webinar. We'll walk through the different stages we commonly see local agencies move through as they mature their Laserfiche implementation, from foundational records management practices to cloud adoption, governance, automation, and AI.

If you've ever found yourself wondering whether your organization is making the most of its Laserfiche investment or simply trying to figure out what comes next, this webinar is for you.

I didn't leave Arizona with a stack of emergency projects or local agencies begging us to rescue their document management systems. I left with something better: a better understanding of the Arizona municipal market, a handful of great conversations, and a lot of excitement about becoming part of it.

I'd call that a successful first trip.
